The fire service reminds residents that one ember is all it takes to start a major fire. Reduce the risk of wildfires by following these guidelines:
• Never mow or trim dry grass during Santa Ana winds or a Red Flag Warning. Mow before 10 a.m. on hot and windy days;
• Never operate lawn mowers in dry vegetation;
• Spark arresters are required on all portable, gasoline-powered equipment;
• Maintain defensible space around structures;
• Focus on the first five feet around structures; removing combustible items such as patio furniture or woodpiles;
• Remove leaves and needles from gutters;
• Screen openings in structures where hot embers can enter;
• Never drive your vehicle or trailer through dry grass when it is hot and windy;
• Have an evacuation plan ready, including your routing; and
• If requested to do so, leave early.
