As Del Mar approaches the Labor Day weekend and unofficial close of summer, the City’s face mask education and enforcement program continues.Launched in August, the education effort employs signage, flyers and a digital communications campaign. On the enforcement side, Sheriff’s deputies are working partial shifts two days per week to patrol the beach, Seagrove and Powerhouse parks, Stratford Court, Camino del Mar, and other areas with high foot traffic.Face covering requirements are spelled out in State and County public health orders. As established by the State and County, violations are prosecuted as misdemeanors and can be punishable with fines of up to $1,000 and jail sentences of up to 90 days, as determined by a judge.

Throughout Del Mar, signage and communications of many varieties remind residents and visitors to wear face coverings. Notwithstanding, the City continues to receive complaints that members of the public are ignoring public health orders that require face coverings when social distancing is not possible.
Enforcement is assigned to Sheriff’s deputies -- as opposed to parking enforcement officers, lifeguards or other City staff – because they are appropriately trained and equipped to handle enforcement of matters of this nature.

Efforts focus on education first, followed by enforcement.
Spread the word
As part of its education effort, the City of Del Mar has produced flyers that remind of face mask requirements.
A notice issued to business owners includes links to download the flyers. The notice states:"The health of residents, visitors, merchants and their employees is a top priority of the City Council. Our purpose is to send a clear message that the City of Del Mar takes public health orders very seriously so everyone can feel safe living, working and recreating in our community."
