Del Mar Racing Safe Haven For 800+ Evacuated Horses
After the devastating loss of 25 horses in the Lilac Fire, Del Mar Racing opens barns & hearts. Over $80,000 raised toward equine care.

DEL MAR, CA — One day after many watched in horror as horses and their people attempted to evacuate from the fast-moving Lilac Fire, funds came pouring in to aid over 800 thoroughbred horses and their humans. A GoFundMe campaign established by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, as well as Santa Anita Park and the Stronach Group, raised over $80,000 in just under two hours.
On Thursday, flames from the fast moving Lilac Fire ripped through the San Luis Rey Downs, striking a devastating blow. The fire quickly engulfed eight barns when it erupted Thursday afternoon, and while an unknown number of horses were evacuated, fire authorities eventually declared conditions unsafe for vehicles to enter the area to pick up the remaining horses.
"Individuals at (San Luis Rey) risked their lives in efforts to free the horses from their stalls and herd them into the safer infield area and training track," public information officer of the California Horse Racing Board Mike Marten said. "However, it is believed that approximately 25 horses perished in the fire."

Over 800 horses were transported to Del Mar Racetrack, which is currently seeking assistance. Approximately 250 of the 450 horses that were formerly stabled at the San Luis Rey training center were moved to the fairgrounds. There have been reports of some injuries to grooms and trainers, but there were no human deaths at the Bonsall facility.
"Del Mar has received a huge outpouring of individuals offering to aid the rescued animals and many of them are being put to work in the stable area," a spokesperson for Del Mar Racing said. "For those needing more information about the evacuation situation at Del Mar, the main Fairgrounds phone number is the one to call. It is (858) 755-1161."

According to the GoFundMe organizer Alexis Garske, the industry has come together at an unprecedented rate to aid the local horse community, affected horses and humans.
"Near or far, people will be able to offer the smallest of amounts knowing that 100% will go towards serving all the Lilac Fire efforts," Garske said. "Feed, bedding, blankets and many other supplies are still needed for the Equine evacuees and donations towards medical bills, housing, and other essential amenities are necessary to help the hurting California horse racing community."
Del Mar Racetrack spokesperson anticipates the need of volunteers for shifts Friday. "We have about 800-850 horses and are expecting more to arrive today," they said.
