SAN DIEGO, CA – National Trails Day held over the weekend at the Gonzales Open Space Preserve in San Diego had a successful turnout with close to 50 enthusiastic volunteers, including 10 children, who joined the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy, REI Outdoors, the San Diego Mountain Biking Association and San Diego Canyonlands to repair trails and tend the conservancy’s new, native demonstration garden.
Volunteers repaired the Sword Way Trailhead and main multi-use trail, watered more than 200 native plantings, installed plant identification signs in the demonstration garden, repaired erosion around the Sword Way footbridge, and cleared trails of overhanging brush to create safe passage for hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians.
Volunteers were rewarded for their hard work with Ben and Jerry's ice cream, snacks, raffle prizes and T-shirts from REI. Organizers gave special thanks to the City of San Diego Department of Parks and Open Space, Black Mountain District and the local National Charity League volunteers, "who continue to be among the most committed volunteers."
