On November 23, 2021, a sixty-three-year-old male inmate at the Vista Detention Facility died at a hospital.

The Medical Examiner's Office is identifying the inmate as Earl Benjamin Smith of San Diego. An autopsy has been performed. The cause and manner of death are pending laboratory results and further evaluation.
The Sheriff's Homicide Unit and the Medical Examiner's Office conducted an exhaustive search for Smith's family. Unfortunately, no family members were located. If you are a relative or family member of Smith, contact the Medical Examiner's Office at (858) 694-2895.

Smith was booked into custody by the San Diego Police Department on April 2, 2021 for 245(A)(1) PC – Assault with a Deadly Weapon Not a Firearm.
