During the preliminary investigation, deputies learned a 17 year-old male, was riding an "e-bike" southbound on San Elijo Road in the bike lane. An Amazon delivery van was traveling westbound on Elfin Forrest Road. The bicyclist collided with the van in the intersection and was subsequently ejected from the e-bike. The bicyclist was transported by San Marcos Fire Department Paramedics to Palomar Hospital. The bicyclist suffered major injuries and is in critical condition, but expected to survive.
Investigators closed the intersection for approximately two and a half hours while the collision investigation was conducted. Although the investigation is not yet complete, preliminary information indicates the bicyclist may have failed to stop for a red light, prior to entering the intersection when the collision occurred.
