Teach Your Pup to Surf at Doggie Surf Camp
The Helen Woodward Animal Center will host surf lessons for dogs on July 20 and 27 and Aug. 10, 27 and 24.

The Helen Woodward Animal Center began its annual surfing classes for dogs at Dog Beach on Saturday morning.
The initial pack of surfer pups were the first to ride 10 Surf Dogs Surf Boards that will be donated by SoCal Surf Dogs during a 9:30 a.m. ceremony, according to the center.
The classes, which will feature instruction time with SoCal Surf Dogs, are being offered for dogs that are encouraged to participate in the annual "Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon" in September.

The beginner-level classes are recommended for dogs with limited experience on the beach and that could benefit from an opportunity to get familiar with the sport, according to Helen Woodward Animal Center officials.
A more advanced class is also offered.

The roughly hourlong classes, each limited to 10 dogs, cost $45 each and include the use of a life vest and a soft foam surf board.
Officials asked that a ratio of one dog per person be maintained.
Classes are scheduled at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon today, on July 20 and 27, and on Aug. 10, 17, and 24. All proceeds from the classes and the annual dog surfing competition go toward the animals and programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center.
