TPHS Volleyball and Cathedral Water Polo Player Named Stars of the Month at SD Hall of Champions

Torrey Pines High School volleyball setter Ryann Chandler and Cathedral Catholic  joins members of the San Diego Chargers and Padres, seven amateur and four other high school athletes as the San Diego Hall of Champions' Stars of the Month for September.

Professional

Logan Forsyth (Baseball, Padres)—While Chase Headley clearly led the way, Forsythe wasn’t far behind as the Padres rolled through September with a new attitude and success on the field that gave bright hope for next season. Forsythe batted .311 (28-for-90) with 22 runs scored in 23 games played. His 22 runs scored ranked tied for fourth most in the National League.

Malcomn Floyd (Chargers, Football)—When the Chargers needed a first down, no player was more successful than the 6-foot-5 receiver who recently got a three-year extension. Floyd caught 15 passes through the first four games, 14 of them resulting in first downs, for 250 yards and a touchdown. His biggest game was 6 receptions for 109 yards against Tennessee.

Reggie Bush (Dolphins, Football, Helix High)—The former Scottie averaged close to 100 yards a game for the Dolphins through the first four games, collecting 369 yards on 67 carries, an average of 5.5 yards a run. His biggest game was a 172-yard, two TD performance against the Raiders in a 35-13 victory. A knee injury has slowed his progress this season. 

Amateur

Mason Mills (Football, USD, Coronado High)— The 6-foot, 190-pound  junior QB guided the Toreros to a 2-2 mark, completing 97 of 147 attempts for 1,037 yards and 8 TDs.  In loss at Harvard he set new USD single game marks for attempts (63) and completions (38) while totaling 354 yards and 1 TD. Against Western New Mexico he completed 27-37 passes for 303 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Daniel Lyon (Cross country, Cal State San Marcos)— Lyon has placed in the top-three in each of the second-ranked Cougars’ meets so far this year. He captured the 8K Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in 24:31, third at the UC Riverside Invite at 24:21.4 and was third at the UC Irvine Invite in 25:00.3 to help CSUSM finish 26 points ahead of its nearest competitor.

Jordan Ongaro (Men’s Soccer, San Diego State)—Scored a team-high tying five goals and added an assist to finish with a team-high 11 points. Took an Aztec-best 27 shots with a team-high 18 coming on net and scored a three-goal hat trick and had an assists against North Florida. Named Pac-12 Player of the Week.

Katie Hoekman (Volleyball, USD)—Hoekman, a junior middle-hitter, helped lead the Toreros to a 12-2 overall record, and into sole possession of first place in the conference. Hoekman recorded 110 kills, hit for an impressive .388 clip, and she led the team with 44 blocks. Hoekman managed to hit at least .400 in seven of USD's 10 matches.  She recorded double-digit kills in six of the 10 matches.

Cassie Callahan (Women’s soccer, UCSD, Coronado High)—The sophomore helped lead the Tritons to a 7-1-1 start, a No. 5 national ranking and a first place standing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Callahan led UCSD in goals (6), points (14), game-winning goals (3), shots (25) and shots on goal (11). She scored game-winning goals in overtime matches against San Francisco State and Cal State San Bernardino.

Megan Jurado (Women’s Soccer, San Diego State)—The senior leads the Aztecs with eight goals and  three assists for a team-high 19 points. Jurado also has five game-winning goals on the season and is in a first-place tie for shots taken on the team with 32.

Tiffany Kracy (Women’s Soccer, Point Loma Nazarene)—Helped the Sea Lions a tie atop the Pacific West Conference. Kracy has started all eight games in net for the Sea Lions and held opponents to just .4 goals per game. She has 18 saves and been part of a PLNU shutout string of 445 minutes, stretching over six matches.

High School

Emma Abrahamson (Cross Country, La Costa Canyon)—There are two major  meets in the month and no one was faster than the Abrahamson who captured the Bronco Invitational at Kit Carson Park (11:08.9 for 2 miles) and the junior race in scorching heat at the Mt. Carmel Invitational held at Balboa Park (15:31 for 2.7 miles).

Daviante Sayles (Football, Rancho Buena Vista)—Was the first running back in the section to surpass 1,000 yards as he pushed his season total to 1,164 yards on just 153 carries—an average of 7.6 yards a carry. Through the first five games the senior also scored 15 TDs and a 2-point conversion for the Longhorns.

Ramsey Romano (Football, Valhalla)—It’s pretty obvious if you’re going to beat Valhalla, you’ll have to outscore the Norsemen. Romano is averaging 314.2 yards a game, completing 96 of 156 attempts for 1,571 yards—almost 400 yards ahead of his nearest rival. Romano, a senior, has 16 TDs and just 5 interceptions.

Kerry Klimpel (Field Hockey, Scripps Ranch)—Headed to Boston University, the senior defender is one of the major reasons the Falcons have allowed just two goals all season and zero on the final day of the Serra Tournament. Klimpel’s passes have been a boon to the Falcons scorers all season. 

Jordan Colina (Water Polo, Cathedral Catholic)—Rolling to an 11-2 record through the first month of the season, the Dons’ senior recorded 40 goals, collected 28 assists and a like number of steals. Cathedral Catholic downed traditional DI power Carlsbad 12-10 to win the America’s Finest City Tournament.

Ryann Chandler (Volleyball, Torrey Pines)—When the Falcons rolled to an 11-1 record, including two wins over No. 2 Assumption of Louisiana, earning the nation’s No. 1 ranking from Prep Volleyball, Chandler was one of the main reasons. The senior setter headed to Pepperdine had 328 assists, 33 kills, 14 aces, 57 digs and 10 blocks. Chandler is the daughter of former NFL quarterback Chris Chandler.
