Winston School Students Mark 9-11
Winston School students commemorate September 11 at Powerhouse Park

Students from Del Mar’s Winston School participated in a September 11 commemorative celebration planting American flags across the greens in Powerhouse Park.
This year middle school students and 11th graders participated. Volunteer Mom Linda Castile organizes the school’s role in the community event that has been in place for more than a decade. It’s a family affair as Castile’s husband plays Taps on the trumpet at sunset as part of the commemoration.
Even though many of the students were not born yet or were just infants when the attack took place, Castile feels they get a lot out of the celebration. “The mere fact that we stop what we’re doing and go out of our way to mark this milestone every year shows them the significance of the sacrifices and the losses we suffered that day as a nation.” Reaction from the students included:
“A beautiful and heartfelt experience,” Katie McKittrick.

“When we went, I was really surprised at how much work had gone into the project,” Zach Fullerton.
“The symbolism of the whole event was really moving. It was shocking that so many people died. It was so big. It’s cool that it was all volunteer - they were going to be there all day!,” Taylor Johnson.

“Walking down the long line of flags, I got more and more sad. I realized as I walked along exactly how many people had died. I understand now, “ Delaney Magaudda.
