VICTORY!
Wednesday morning a foreclosure sale was held for the 15.7 acre site on Brea Canyon Cutoff where Trammell Crow Residential (TCR) wanted to construct its four story 775 unit apartment project. The buyer was a religious educational foundation. Southland Christian Schools (SCS), the current tenant of the site, has scheduled meetings with the new owners to negotiate a long term lease that would allow SCS to continue on the site.
The sale by TCR removes their threat of development of this property in a manner that would require an amendment of our Rowland Heights Community General Plan (RHCGP). The effort to defeat TCR’s proposal was successful because of the widespread opposition of thousands of Rowland Heights residents. To all of you who participated in the picket lines, made phone calls, walked door-to-door to hand out flyers, obtained signatures on petitions of opposition, and attended the hearings, we say thank you and well done.

The turning point in this fight was the public hearing held by the Regional Planning Commission (RPC) in the gym at Rowland High in November of 2010. The turnout of 1500 to 2000 residents opposing the project at that hearing demonstrated to the Commission that Rowland Heights residents did not want the RHCGP amended and did not want the community converted into a high density area.
We were lucky this time. The County listened to us and rejected the developers proposal. The next time we might not be so fortunate.
