City Marks Opening of New Library

What better way to celebrate the opening of Diamond Bar’s new library than with a party for the whole family?

The city and County of Los Angeles Library officials are teaming up to host a special dedication and grand opening celebration Saturday at the new facility at 21800 Copley Drive.

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. with brief remarks by officials and a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the entrance of the new library, according to city staff.

Scheduled events include

• 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Guided tours of the library.
• 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Outdoor Family Fun Area featuring face painting, crafts, games and other hands-on activities.
• 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Indoor Activities highlighting different areas of the library; Outdoor Food Tent serving free meals and refreshments - until 500 are served.
• 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sign-ups for free County Public Library cards.

The new library is part of the new Diamond Bar City Hall. It has 27,000 square feet of space, triple the size of its former location. It is expected to feature 83,528 books and materials, 37 public computer workstations – six of which are early literacy computers for ages 7 and under - with free WiFi Internet access, and three self-checkout stations, officials said.

There will be separate areas for adults and two youth sections – one for children and another for teens with a Wii and PlayStation video game consoles – as well as an outdoor Reading Garden, officials said.

“The Library is on track to obtain a Silver level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the United States Green Building Council in recognition of the sustainability practices incorporated during the design and construction process, such as using building materials made from recycled content and installing energy saving features and a low-flow plumbing system,” officials said.

Library staff began their move from the facility on Grand Avenue on . It had been home to the library for 35 years.
