Fatal Hit-and-Run Suspect Surrenders to Police

The suspect allegedly struck and killed a mother and injured her daughter as they were crossing the street.

COVINA, CA - A hit-and-run motorist turned himself in to authorities after he struck and killed a woman while she was walking her 10-year-old daughter across a street in Covina, police said Monday.

The 10-year-old girl suffered moderate injuries from the crash in the 1100 block of West San Bernardino Road and was transported to an area hospital, the Covina Police Department reported.

Police dispatched to the scene a little after 7:30 p.m Sunday located the two victims on the street. The woman was rushed to an area hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Witnesses told police that a westbound brown Nissan Altima struck the woman and her child, continued westbound on San Bernardino Road and failed to stop to render aid.

Jose Higareda, the motorist in the brown Nissan Altima, later turned himself in at the Covina Police Department, with the encouragement of his wife and child, who were passengers in his car, police said.

Higareda, a resident of Irwindale, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run with injuries and was being held at the Covina Police Department in lieu of $50,000 bail. He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday at the Citrus Superior Court.
