NY Mets Draft Cal Poly Pomona Slugger Travis Taijeron

The Broncos centerfielder is drafted in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

Travis Taijeron, star center fielder for Cal Poly Pomona, was selected by the New York Mets in the 18th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft on Tuesday.

Taijeron, who was named the Male Athlete of the Year by the California Collegiate Athletic Association, started all 59 games for the Broncos this past season while leading them with a .392 batting average and tying his own school record with 16 home runs.

Chosen National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Daktronics West Region Player of the Year, Taijeron led Cal Poly with 59 runs, 78 hits, 20 doubles, 51 RBI and a .744 slugging percentage this season.  His play helped the Broncos (36-23) the championship game of the NCAA Division II West Regionals.

In the final month of the season, from April 28 to May 22, Taijeron hit .542, had an on-base percentage of .674, and had a slugging percentage of 1.000.  He also drew 24 walks during that span.
