Pomona Unified Students Get a Glimpse into Health Science Careers

The Pomona Health Career Ladder provides PUSD students with opportunities to explore health care professions.

More than 300 Pomona Unified students and their parents are expected to attend the Pomona Health Career Ladder’s second academy in a series, forensics, in which middle school students will learn investigative procedures from Western University of Health Sciences health professions students while high school students explore an anatomy and cadaver lab.

To wrap up the academy, all students will learn about real-life crime scene investigation from the Pomona Police Department as they tour the Pomona Crime Scene Investigation vehicle.

The family-oriented event will include Ganesha High School music teacher Rafael Duran, who will kick off the event with a rousing performance. Parents will have the opportunity to learn about WesternU’s many community outreach efforts along with an informational and interactive session on infectious diseases. Flu vaccines will also be provided free of charge.

Now in its sixth year, the Pomona Health Career Ladder, a partnership between Pomona Unified, Cal Poly Pomona and WesternU, puts on monthly Saturday workshops that promote health care careers to PUSD middle and high school students and their parents. The workshops are conducted by dozens of health care professionals and WesternU students. Future workshops scheduled are: cardiovascular/diabetes (Nov. 15), disability (Dec. 13), disaster preparedness (Jan. 31) and emergency drills (March 7). An end-of-year awards ceremony and celebration will take place April 25, 2015.
