Dixon Man Hit, Killed On I-80 Was Trying To Retrieve Ladder: CHP

A pedestrian fatally struck by a car Monday has been identified as a Dixon man who was trying to retrieve a ladder that fell off his truck.

DIXON, CA β€” A pedestrian struck and killed by a car Monday morning on Interstate Highway 80 near the Currey Road off-ramp has been identified as 58-year-old Dixon man Joseph Gingerich, according to authorities with the California Highway Patrol and the Solano County Sheriff-Coroner's Office.

At 8:10 a.m. Monday, Gingerich was driving a white Chevrolet Silverado on eastbound I-80 near state Highway 113 when a ladder fell off the back of his pickup truck and landed in the slow lane, authorities said.

Gingerich "pulled his vehicle to the right shoulder, reversed to the ladder, and exited his vehicle," said CHP Solano Area Public Information Officer Dave Harvey.

As Gingerich was trying to recover the ladder, he was hit by a gray Toyota Camry.

Emergency personnel with the CHP and the Dixon Fire Department responded to the incident.

The driver of the Camry, a 25-year-old Vacaville man, remained at the scene as authorities arrived.

At 8:25 a.m., Gingerich was pronounced deceased at the scene by Dixon Fire Department personnel, Harvey said.

A juvenile was in the pickup with Gingerich and a family member came to the scene, Harvey said.

North First Street in Dixon was shut down as result of the fatal incident. A Sig-alert was issued at 8:37 a.m., with traffic reportedly backed up to Dixon. The roadway and freeway ramp were reopened before 11 a.m.


The crash remained under investigation Monday afternoon; anyone with pertinent information is asked to contact CHP at 800-TELL-CHP (1-800-835-5247) or the CHP Solano Area Office at 707-428-2100.

"Relate that you have information for CHP - Solano and Officer Deters who is handling this investigation," Harvey said. "Any information obtained in regards to this collision will be greatly appreciated."
