His car was struck Monday night. His 18-year-old passenger from Dixon suffered major injuries.

The Solano County coroner’s office has identified a man who was killed when a passenger train struck his vehicle Monday night in unincorporated Elmira as 26-year-old Vacaville resident Timothy Jones.

Jones, the driver, and his right front seat passenger Nathan Gates, 18, of Dixon, were in a Kia Forte when an Amtrak train struck the vehicle at Fox and Hawkins roads east of Vacaville around 9:45 p.m. Monday, California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Parker said.

Jones was ejected from the Kia and was pronounced dead at the scene. Gates suffered major injuries and was taken to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Parker said.

The Capitol Corridor Amtrak train with 26 passengers and three crewmembers was heading west from Sacramento to Oakland, Amtrak spokesperson Vernae Graham said. No one on board was injured.

The signals and lights gates at the crossing on Fox Road were all functioning when the crash occurred, Parker said. The train’s crew asked to be relieved after the crash and another crew responded. The crash delayed four trains, Graham said.
