DHS Football: Dixon to Use Scrimmage for Fine Tuning

Rams look to finalize depth chart and tweak rosters after Saturday's three-team practice.

The football team got a chance to hit somebody else for a change, as the Rams participated in a three-team scrimmage Saturday at Woodland High School.

In addition to the Rams and Wolves, Del Campo also took part in the practice.

Dixon head coach Wes Besseghini said the ultimate goal of the practice was to tighten up the depth charts for the offense and defense as welll as to evaluate his players.

“It’s hard to really get a good look at all of your guys when they’re going against themselves,” he said.

Besseghini will determine the winners of a handful of position battles after Saturday's practice.

“We have a few guys competing for a few different spots,” he said. “This is really going to show what’s going on.”

Besseghini said that the defense was more set than the offense, saying that six players were competing for four defensive line spots, and the same amount were in contention for linebackers’ spots.

The Rams didn’t take part in a scrimmage last year due to a scheduling error. Besseghini is glad that they didn’t have the same problem this year.

“This is nice for us to see where all our kids are before we go play our first game on Friday night,” he said.

Dixon’s transition to a pro set offense is going smoothly, but Besseghini said he’ll use elements of both during the scrimmage to neutralize the size of Del Campo and Woodland.

The Rams will visit Palo Cedro (Redding) to start the season next Friday with the junior varsity starting at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30 p.m.

“With Palo Cedro, all we’re looking for is to go out and play our game, and be really physical with them,” Besseghini said. “We’ll let the ball fall where it does after that.”
