Prospectors Digging For Gold in Town's Sewers
Fortune seekers going for the gold are going underground--at the expense of one town's infrastructure.
Remember the old Clint Eastwood movie “Paint Your Wagon”--prospectors dig tunnels under a gold rush town to get to the gold dust spilled in saloons and other businesses?
A similar thing is happening in Auburn, a town that traces its heritage to California’s Gold Rush.

Modern day prospectors are plying their trade in the town’s storm sewers, and it’s making some business owners and community officials nervous.
In “Paint Your Wagon” the entire town collapses into the tunnels. While that hasn’t happened in Auburn, there are concerns about roads buckling or collapsing.

The noise is also disruptive to businesses above. Prospecting in the sewers is illegal but, so far, no one has been arrested.
Town officials are now trying to limit access to the the sewers.
