In response to recent fires that have seen animal owners scrambling to remove their livestock from danger, Solano County officials say they have acquired a trailer that can help evacuate animals and provide temporary animal housing in a disaster.
The new 27-foot Exiss gooseneck trailer will allow animal control officers to transport large animals and smaller animals in kennels, as well as equipment, supplies and off-road vehicles, Solano County Sheriff’s Office officials said Wednesday.

Until now, the evacuation of animals in a fire or other disaster has been handled entirely by volunteers.
The trailer also has space in the gooseneck that can be used for equipment storage or as a bunkroom for personnel in the field, and corral panels that will allow the creation of a temporary animal housing area, officials said.

The trailer was purchased by the Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Division with the help of an Urban Area Security Initiative grant administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
