The work is the first of seven phases of the ongoing Highway 80/Interstate Highway 680/Highway 12 interchange project to reduce congestion and improve safety in the area.

The interchange was built in the 1960s. The project includes a new four-lane Green Valley Road overcrossing just east of the existing two-lane overcrossing, as well as a new ramp to westbound Highway 80 and Highway 12.

The connector ramp from westbound I-80 to westbound Highway 12 also will be widened from one to two lanes, Jacala said.

During tonight’s closure, motorists should drive past the connector on westbound I-80, exit at Red Top Road, go north on Red Top Road for a quarter-mile to the Red Top Road/Highway 12 intersection and enter westbound Highway 12 from Red Top Road, Jacala said. Detour signs will be posted and motorists should expect delays.

All work is weather permitting, Jacala said. The speed limit through the construction zone on westbound I-80 in Fairfield is 55 mph, Jacala said.
