Weekly Update On Planning For The 2020 To 21 School Reopening - Dixon Unified School District

This is the final update on the reopening of school prior to our actual start on August 24th. We will continue to provide district-wide communication after school starts, in addition to that which will be coming from the sites.

At this point in time, all students should have received their information regarding their schedule and teacher assignments. If not, please contact the appropriate school immediately.

If you are receiving these communications but are no longer planning to have your children attend school in Dixon Unified, we would ask that you contact the school(s) you would be attending to let them know to disenroll your child(ren). This helps us have accurate counts of students and address other logistical issues.

We are concerned that we have many students who are still in need of getting a computer to use, as well as families that do not yet have access to the internet. We also anticipate that there will be technical issues that families will need tech support as Distance Learning begins. To help with this, we are holding a combined computer distribution and help desk event on Monday, August 24th from Noon to 7:00 P.M. in the Multi-Purpose Room at Dixon High School. Park on the front of the campus to access the MPR. Families that need help logging in, getting connected, or other technical issues should come with their devices and our techs will be able to provide immediate assistance. There will be additional support provided once instruction begins, but this event will provide help prior to the start of the synchronous or real-time instruction that students will begin on Tuesday.

Sites are currently finalizing their plans for the distribution of instructional materials and supplies. Unlike what we were able to do in the Spring with Distance Learning, students will receive books, workbooks, etc. for use as part of the instructional program. Each site will be providing the information directly to their families.

Updates on Food Services

Federal guidelines allowed the District to serve lunches to any student in the District at no cost throughout the whole period of school closure and summer. Beginning August 24, the District’s food service program will serve meals daily to district enrolled students at all Dixon Unified school sites. Meals will be charged based on the student’s qualification for free, reduced-price, or full-price meals. The student or parent/guardian must provide the student’s name or district-issued ID number in order to receive a meal. When paying by check or cash, place the exact payment into a sealed envelope with the student’s name and ID number written on the envelope. No change will be provided.

• Elementary sites serving time: 11am-12:30pm
• CA Jacobs serving time: 11:30am-1:00pm
• Dixon High serving time: 11:00-12:30pm

We encourage every family to apply for free or reduced-price lunch as the pandemic has had negative impacts on many family’s finances. A Few Final Words Before Our Start

It’s a large understatement that we all wish we could start the year differently than we will next week. True learning, growth, and development are based on meaningful interactions between all of us, loving and supportive relationships, and shared experiences - especially while together in-person. As parents, we couldn’t raise our children nearly as effectively if we had to do it remotely, and we know that the Distance Learning model has the same kind of limitations. All of this said, we cannot change our circumstances right now, so will do our very best to make school meaningful and productive for everyone.

We have worked very hard to prepare ourselves for the start of the year, and appreciate your understanding with the delay in the start of the year from our original date of August 10th. We have used the additional two weeks to make the final physical preparations for the start of the year, but more importantly, we were able to provide our staff with extensive training and professional development. Our teachers are much better prepared to provide quality instruction in a variety of ways as a result of these learning opportunities. We appreciate the time and effort that they invested in this preparation.

As in so many ways right now, and as we have asked since the school closure in March, this is a time for support, patience, and understanding from all of us. We have had some people describe what happened between mid-March and June as Crisis Learning instead of Distance Learning. It is an accurate term as we look back at the period of time. While these days remain challenging, we have had the opportunity to plan for and prepare to begin in Distance Learning. You will see a higher quality program, more structure and accountability, and a wider range of services for students and families. Nevertheless, we will still see lots of challenges and things that will need to be addressed as we move forward. That’s where the support, patience, and understanding comes back in - from all of us.

The start of each school year is an exciting time filled with hope and opportunities. It is understandable that most of us are feeling less of those things this year, but we should remain positive, optimistic, and committed to our students, nevertheless. We look forward to seeing our students and families beginning next week!

Algunas palabras finales antes de nuestro comienzo

Todos deseamos poder empezar el año de manera diferente de lo que lo hará la próxima semana. El verdadero aprendizaje, crecimiento y desarrollo se basan en interacciones significativas entre todos nosotros, relaciones amorosas y de apoyo y experiencias compartidas, especialmente mientras estamos juntos en persona. Como padres, no podríamos criar a nuestros hijos con la misma eficacia si tuviéramos que hacerlo de forma remota y sabemos que el modelo de Aprendizaje a Distancia tiene el mismo tipo de limitaciones. Dicho todo esto, no podemos cambiar nuestras circunstancias en este momento, por lo que haremos todo lo posible para que la escuela sea significativa y productiva para todos.

Hemos trabajado muy duro para prepararnos para el inicio del año y agradecemos su comprensión con el retraso en el inicio del año desde nuestra fecha original del 10 de agosto.
