Dr. Jim Kohnen biography:
On May 29, 2012, the City of Dublin, California and the Tri-Valley community lost a lifetime public servant in Jim Kohnen. Dr. Kohnen exemplified public service at the local level, having volunteered his time for a variety of local service organizations such as the Boy Scouts and the League of Women Voters, spent a lifetime advocating the importance of education, and served as an elected or appointed official on five local boards of directors. These boards included Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District, Dublin San Ramon Services District, the Zone 7 Water Agency, Alameda County Special Districts Association, and American Association of Quality. He lived a life of humility in service to the people of his community.
The late Dr. Kohnen retired from the U.S. Army Reserves as a Colonel in the Corps of Engineers after 30 years of service. During his service he graduated from the U.S. Army War College, the Air War College, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. This was fitting for a man who emphasized the importance of lifelong learning, having himself earned six degrees over his lifetime, including two bachelors degrees, two masters degrees, and a doctorate in education. He completed his career by serving as a high school teacher at San Leandro High School, where he taught political science, management, and general science. He also was a member of the management faculties at the University of Phoenix and St. Mary’s College.
