Update: Deadly Morning Crash on I-580

Update:

A man died this morning when his truck rear-ended another truck on Interstate Highway 580, causing both vehicles to go down an embankment east of Livermore.

At 5:32 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to a report of a collision on eastbound Highway 580 west of the Grant Line Road undercrossing in unincorporated Alameda County, according to the CHP.

A 43-year-old man was driving a 2000 GMC Sierra pickup truck on the highway at about 65 mph when a 2006 GMC Sierra pickup truck traveling at a high rate of speed struck it from behind, CHP officials said. The impact caused both vehicles to veer across all four lanes and go down an embankment along the highway. The driver of the 2006 GMC Sierra, identified as a 35-year-old Modesto man, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle as it overturned. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP Officer Derek Reed.

The 43-year-old in the 2000 GMC Sierra walked away from the collision uninjured.

CHP officers concluded he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Officers, however, do not yet know if the deceased driver of the 2006 GMC Sierra was driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Reed at (925) 828-0466.

One person is dead after a two-car collision on Interstate Highway 580 Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 5:33 a.m. on eastbound I-580 just west of the Grant Line Road exit, according to the CHP.

The CHP said two vehicles went down an embankment or a hill, and the officers remained at the scene. According to the CHP, the number four lane would remain closed as crews worked to retrieve the vehicles.
