DUBLIN, CA — An 8th grader at Fallon Middle School created an app to help consumers save water.

Arjun Mahajan told Patch that he created his free Drought Saver app, which provides easy and intuitive ways for people to monitor and reduce their water usage, out of concern for the environment.

“With such massive drought conditions last year in California, I just couldn’t help but consider doing something to help my community deal with the drought,” he wrote in an email. Inspired by emergency regulations - since rescinded in Alameda County - that limited outdoor watering, decorative fountains, and other outdoor water usage, Arjun spent six months creating an app that would help people find different ways to cut down their usage.

Users can set a water goal each day based on usage, which is tracked. The app also contains a timer for showers and other water uses, and numerous tips of saving water drawn from resources like drought.gov.

The app is available on Google Play. Arjun said he hopes to continue to improve the app, and create new ones in the future.
