Dublin Unified School District Superintendent Retires After 10 Years

The community says farewell to Dr. Stephen Hanke, who will retire on June 30.

DUBLIN, CA: Longtime Dublin Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hanke says goodbye to his post after serving the school district for ten years.

Hanke announced his retirement at the Board of Trustees meeting on January 26.

“I have had the wonderful opportunity to serve the Dublin community for the past 10 years, and am especially proud to be a part of an amazing team of leaders and teachers who have worked very hard to build our school district into what it is today, a highly sought-after, strong organization focused on what really matters, student learning,” Dr. Hanke said in a previous article. “This decision is a difficult one for me to make and has been on my mind for a time. After much discussion with my family, we have decided the time is right to take this step.”

Prior to his tenure in Dublin, Dr. Hanke served as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent in four school districts, including six years as the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources in the Las Virgenes Unified School District.

Dublin Unified School Board Trustee Amy Miller says Hanke has a heart of gold.

"Serving on this school board with Dr. Hanke and his leadership team has been one of the richest experiences of my life," Miller said. "I have grown up in this role, learned more than I could ever have imagined and developed a great deal of admiration for what Dr. Hanke gives and does. I have never met anyone who works as hard as Dr. Hanke and his team. The work ethic, dedication and generosity of resources, time, energy and personal sacrifice, still don’t cease to amaze me."

Once a teacher, always a teacher. Hanke says he plans to retirement plans include travel, spending time with his grandchildren and teaching classes as an adjunct professor. Hanke's retirement will be effective June 30.

Staff and students created a touching farewell video tribute to Hanke.

Dr. Leslie Boozer as the lone finalist for the position of Superintendent of Schools to replace Hanke.
