Dublin Volunteer Recognition Awards Nomination Deadline Approaching

DUBLIN, CA — Dublin residents interested in recognizing outstanding members of their community have until Friday at 5 p.m. to submit nominations. The city is accepting nominations for the 2022 Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (awarded to volunteers in grades 1-12), and Organization of the Year.

The awards recognize anyone who has made significant contributions to Dublin life. Any person or organization that has won before is not eligible for the three years following their win.
Winners of the Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year will win $300, while the Organization of the Year will win $500. The other two finalists in each category will be awarded $200 each. Winners of the Citizen, Young Citizen, and Organization of the Year will be recognized Wednesday, Feb. 22 at the Shannon Community Center.

The mayor will also select recipients of the Mayor’s Award (outstanding work over the past year) and the Mayor’s Legacy Award (outstanding work done over a long period of time.)

In 2021, the winners were as follows:

• Citizen Award: Steve Wright, who worked six days a week with Open Heart Kitchen during the pandemic to make sure the unhoused had access to vital services.
• Young Citizen Award: Summer Shi, a Dublin High School student who offered free summer classes to more than 40 young students.
• Organization of the Year: Breaking BEARiers: A nonprofit founded by six high school freshmen (including Shi) that provides tutoring and summer classes, and conducted several charity drives.
• Mayor’s Award: John Samples, owner of Dublin’s first microbrewery that converted into a grocery store offering contactless delivery during the pandemic.
• Mayor’s Legacy Award: Eddie Jo Mack, a long-time city volunteer and former member of the Planning Commission and Dublin Senior Center Advisory Committee.
