Eagle Scout Award for Nikhil Sakthirajan
Eagle project builds drought tolerant and eco-friendly garden for Cottonwood Creek School
Nikhil Sakthirajan has qualified to become an Eagle Scout at an Board of Review, held by the Twin Valley District of Scouts BSA, his Court of Honor was held on December 22, 2021. He is the son of Sakthirajan Chelliah and Nithya Srinivasan of Dublin and is a member of Troop 904 sponsored by John Knox Presbyterian Church. Many thanks to his scoutmaster Larry Woods for his hard work and support.
Nikhil has been an active leader in his troop, serving as Senior patrol leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, and Scribe. He especially loved the outdoors experiences of camping and cooking and the opportunity to make new friends in scouting, while learning many new skills through the merit badge program.
For his Eagle project, Nikhil renovated the Cottonwood Creek K-8 School’s Garden in Dublin for ease of maintenance and drought tolerance. His volunteers cleared dead plants, rejuvenated the soil, planted and labeled native eco-friendly plants, built a bird feeder, completing the complete make-over of the garden. Over 105 man-hours were spent on the project. The total cost of the project was raised through a Parent Faculty Club campaign. The project will enable teachers to conduct science programs in the garden and teach students about California native plants. The renovated garden includes vegetable plants for the school kitchen, drought-tolerant plants requiring minimal watering, and flowering plants to invite monarch butterflies and hummingbirds.
