It's Official: 'Emerald High School' Will Be Dublin's New School

DUBLIN, CA — "Emerald High School" was chosen this week as the name of Dublin's second high school, planned to open in the Fall of 2022.

The unanimous decision was finalized by the Dublin Unified School District Board at Tuesday night's meeting.

Emerald will be the city's second, comprehensive high school, with capacity for 1,300 students. Groundbreaking is planned mid- to late-September at the planned site, bounded by Central Parkway, Dublin Boulevard, Grafton Street and Finnian Way, officials said.

More than 260 suggested names from the community were reviewed by a naming committee, which narrowed selections to three: Alamilla Springs High School, referencing a natural spring that serves as an oasis of sorts to represent those migrating to the area; Parks High School, a nod to Dublin's military base, Camp Parks; and Emerald, the moniker chosen as it proved ideally tied to Dublin's Irish connection, according to the board.

Uniqueness also was a determining factor, and no other Emerald High Schools exist in California, with only one other in the U.S., located in South Carolina, officials said.

Also handled at Tuesday's meeting were the awarding of a construction contract for the school, naming an interim superintendent for the district and adopting a resolution condemning racism and supporting educational equity.

Teichert Construction was selected for the Phase 1, Increment 1 portion of the Emerald H.S. project, which includes installing most underground utilities, clearing and grubbing the entire site, erection of construction sound walls and building the engineered building pads.

Dr. Daniel Moirao was named interim superintendent, with a contract that runs through August 2021. Moirao currently is the acting superintendent and will take over as interim at the end of the month when David Marken's contract expires.

The board also adopted resolution 2020-21-07, which condemns systemic racism and affirms the district's commitment to educational equity for students, families and staff. A copy of the resolution can be found here.
