City Council Could Vote Next Week on Colorado Boulevard Sinkhole
A depression in the corridor east of Figueroa has been barricaded since August.

A motion that introduced in the City Council Wednesday to conduct a study about the possible causes and solutions regarding a sinkhole along Colorado Boulevard mighe be voted on as early as next week.
The motion was referred to the Council’s Public Works Committee and was not scheduled for a vote Friday, as had been reported in the media, according to Council District 14 Director of Communications Rick Coca.
Seconded by Council member Tony Cardenas, the motion asks the Bureau of Engineering to follow through on its own recommendation that a study be conducted along a stretch of the Colorado corridor where there is a depression in the street. Besides conducting the study, the motion asks that the Bureau of Engineering suggest possible solutions to the problem.

The affected area lies about a third of a mile east of the Figueroa Street crossing and is readily identified by a series of cracks along Colorado’s right-hand lane, which is blocked to traffic. The area is about 145 long and 12 feet wide, Huizar stated in his motion, details of which can be viewed as a pdf file in the photos section above.
Since August, the Bureau of Street Services has installed barricades to warn drivers of about the sinkhole (see photo), which might have been caused by previously unfinished work on the street or because of the replacement of a water main, according to the motion.

City Council procedure requires all motions to be sent to a relevant Council committee before the motion is voted on. Huizar, who chairs the Council’s Public Works Committee, might waive the motion’s review by the committee and send it straight to the Council for a vote next week, Coca said.
