How New Redistricting Maps Could Affect Eagle Rock

The neighborhood will likely be merged with Northeast L.A. and East L.A., resulting in fewer voices in the state senate and assembly.

The California Citizens Redistricting Commission has approved its final maps for new congressional and state electoral districts, increasing the likelihood that the maps will become voting districts until the next redistricting process a decade later.

The maps were endorsed last Friday by the 14-member California Citizens Redistricting Commission, whose final meeting is scheduled for Aug. 15, according to the commission's spokesman Rob Wilcox. On that day, the commission will either vote to finalize the maps or reject them. No further revisions are planned before August 15, Wilcox said. (More information about the commission and its process can be ).

The new maps (which can be viewed at right or on an interactive map here) differ slightly from those initially proposed in June. Their impact, however, would be the same if they receive final approval: Eagle Rock (as well as its neighbors such as Glassell Park, Highland Park and Mount Washington) will have lesser representation in the state senate and assembly.

At the same time, Eagle Rock will also be merged with East Los Angeles, and would no longer share representation with San Gabriel Valley cities and towns.

State Senate Districts

Eagle Rock lies in the 44th state assembly district, the 29th and 31st congressional districts, and the 21st California senate district. The new maps would merge the vast majority of Northeast Los Angeles into a single district, while also incorporating the community of East Los Angeles.

The new maps also mean that residents in the state’s 21st senate district would no longer share representation with cities such as South Pasadena, San Marino, Pasadena and Alhambra.

Assembly Districts

Because the new maps would merge Eagle Rock with the rest of its Northeast Los Angeles neighbors as well as with the unincorporated community of East Los Angeles, Eagle Rockers would cease to share representation in the 44th state assembly district along with La Cañada Flintridge, South Pasadena, Altadena and parts of Monrovia and Arcadia.

Further, Assemblymember Anthony Portantino, Eagle Rock’s (and Highland Park's) current representative, would no longer be a resident in the new district. (In fact, Portantino is reaching his term limit and has said .)

Congressional District

Eagle Rock, along with Highland Park and Mount Washington, is currently represented in the 31st Congressional District by Congressmember Xavier Becerra (D-Los Angeles). Although the size of the district would change—a gap in the district between South Los Angeles and State Route 710 would be filled—its representation will likely remain the same because Becerra is a Los Angeles resident.
