📰 News we're reading

1. Following warehouse fire in Boyle Heights, LB wants answers on downstream impacts (sigtrib.com) — A massive Boyle Heights warehouse fire sent black smoke and foul odors over East Los Angeles and is now raising concerns about contaminated runoff flowing down the LA River. Long Beach officials are demanding stronger notification and cleanup rules after detecting elevated bacteria levels, arguing downstream communities need clearer protections when industrial fires affect regional waterways.

2. New book celebrates the Virgin of Guadalupe across Los Angeles (theeastsiderla.com) — Murals of the Virgin of Guadalupe in East Los Angeles appear alongside images from other neighborhoods in a new photo book documenting this spiritual street art across the city. Photographer Sam Quinones highlights how these murals support immigrant-owned businesses, deter graffiti, and offer comfort to working-class communities as many small shops and iconic artworks disappear.

3. Lineage donated $50,000 to cover utility bills for 219 Boyle Heights households. Is it enough? (laist.com) — East Los Angeles residents near the Lineage warehouse fire are facing sharply higher electric bills from running air purifiers nonstop, while only nearby Boyle Heights LADWP customers currently receive automatic bill credits from a $50,000 Lineage donation. County Supervisor Hilda Solis and Southern California Edison are pressing Lineage to extend similar relief to more than 100 SCE customers in unincorporated East LA, but details and eligibility remain unsettled.

4. Rep. Jimmy Gomez's toughest opponent may be an ethics investigation (washingtonexaminer.com) — Voters in East Los Angeles are watching Rep. Jimmy Gomez’s reelection bid as a House Ethics Committee investigation into alleged sexual misconduct turns his usually safe, deep-blue district race into a test of trust and accountability. Progressive challenger Angela Gonzales-Torres, backed by Justice Democrats, hopes to capitalize on the controversy in a district that includes Downtown and East LA, where Democrats dominate and the primary effectively decides the seat.
