East Palo Alto Man Gets 14 Years In Deadly Crash

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A 28-year-old East Palo Alto man was sentenced Thursday to a maximum 14 years in state prison for a June 16, 2017, reckless-driving collision that killed a father of five and seriously injured his wife, San Mateo County prosecutors said.

DiAngelo Pantalion Williams appeared in San Mateo County Superior Court Thursday morning and apologized for the East Palo Alto crash, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. In April, Williams pleaded no contest to felony vehicular manslaughter.

Williams was driving 65 to 70 mph in a 25 mph zone on University Avenue last year when he ran two red lights at the intersections of Notre Dame Avenue and Kavanaugh Drive and broadsided a car on University, killing 49-year-old Jose Diaz-Galaviz. Diaz-Galaviz's wife suffered a fractured skull and other injuries.

Investigators determined drugs and alcohol were not involved in the crash. Williams was also ordered to pay $7,500 in restitution to Diaz-Galaviz's family.

The sentence reflects Williams' prior criminal history, which includes a robbery conviction, according to Wagstaffe.
