2 Injured In Highway Shooting, Freeway Shut Down In SMC For Hours: Police

SAN CARLOS, CA — Two people were injured after gunfire struck a car on Highway 101 in San Carlos on Sunday, prompting authorities to shut down the busy freeway for hours, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The shooting was reported around 5 p.m. on northbound Highway 101 south of Holly Street.

Investigators said someone opened fire on a black Infiniti sedan carrying three people: a 25-year-old driver and two passengers, ages 22 and 17.

One person was grazed by a bullet in the hand, while another suffered a back injury, officials said. Neither was seriously injured.

Investigators have not determined whether the people inside the Infiniti were targeted or were caught in crossfire.

The shooting prompted authorities to close northbound Highway 101 for several hours as officers investigated, causing significant traffic backups. All lanes have since reopened.

The CHP has not released a description of the shooter or a suspect vehicle and has not identified a possible motive.

The investigation remains ongoing.
