At Village Playgarden Preschool in Altadena, building and caring for the community is part of the ethos. So, when Morgan Southall-Vancea and Bo Violet Vig, Village Playgarden alumni, and their friend, Beatrice Schemel, heard that another of their friends, Miles and his family, needed to raise funds for a service dog, they hatched a plan.

Miles was born with the neurological disorder known as Dandy-Walker syndrome and at six year’s old he is still unable to walk. To get around, he crawls from place to place. The right help for Miles now is a trained stability dog that will provide support while he transitions from crawling to walking. 4 Paws for Ability, a respected non-profit organization that raises and trains service dogs specific to an individual’s disability will be providing Miles with a dog that meets his needs.

The community is committed to helping the family raise $15,000 so that Miles can get the dog he deserves. Anxious to help Miles do just that Morgan, Bo Violet, and Beatrice fused their love for baking, dogs, and good causes and came up with a winning way to help: baking and selling handmade dog cookies. From a handful of hearts to large personalized dog bones, the girls created a treasure trove of canine treats and raised over $1,000 in one week.
