UPDATED: Fire Engulfs Echo Park Home

Dozens of firefighters battled a blaze that has engulfed a home on Echo Park Avenue.

ECHO PARK, CA - It took 86 firefighters about 25 minutes to knock down a fully engulfed house fire in Echo Park Monday afternoon.

“It’s knocked down,” said the Los Angeles Fire Department's Brian Humphrey. “It’s out.”

No human injuries were reported as a result of the blaze, which was sparked by an unattended cigarette, according to Humphrey.

Firefighters got the call for a one-story fire at a home at 640 Echo Park Ave shortly before 3:30 p.m. Crews had the fire out by 3:50 p.m., according to Humphrey. The home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, said Humphrey.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the amount of damage has yet to be determined. Crews kept the flames from spreading to adjacent homes, but one had broken windows due to radiant heat and another sustained minor water damage, he said.

The fire displaced two residents who were away when the blaze broke out. They declined Red Cross assistance, choosing to seek their own accommodation, Humphrey said.
