Man Stranded in Los Angeles River in Silver Lake Area Rescued Safely

A small boat was used by firefighters to bring him to shore.

SILVER LAKE, CA – UPDATE: THURSDAY, JAN. 5, 3:45 p.m.

Los Angeles firefighters today rescued a man who had become stranded on an island in the rain-swollen Los Angeles River in the Silver Lake area.

More than 70 firefighters, including two helicopter crews, were sent to the scene.

The man was eventually brought to safety by rescuers who used a small boat, and he was apparently uninjured.

The man was on a mid-stream island with a thicket of vegetation, and while the water speed and depth were appreciably diminishing, it was still dangerous, the agency said.

Los Angeles firefighters this morning are working to rescue a man stranded on an island in the Los Angeles River near the 2500 block of Fletcher Drive in the Silver Lake area, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The man is in "minimal distress'' and is safe where he is, the LAFD reports.

The agency either plans to use a water-based rescue by the LAFD Swift Water Rescue Team, with an inflatable boat or a use an LAFD helicopter hoist from downstream.

The man is on a mid-stream island with a thicket of vegetation, and while the water speed and depth is appreciably diminishing, it is still dangerous, the agency said.
