Repairs Made, Roads Open After Broken Water Main

The break created a sinkhole and flooded streets north of downtown L.A.

ECHO PARK, CA – Repair crews completed street repairs Friday in an intersection shut down when a water main ruptured north of downtown Los Angeles, flooding streets and the parking lots of a fast-food restaurant and pharmacy.

The repairs were completed Friday morning and all lanes on Sunset Boulevard and Beaudry Avenue in Echo Park were reopened, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power spokeswoman Jessica Johnson said.

LADWP repair crews responded about 11 p.m. Wednesday to the intersection. Ten customers lost water service due to the ruptured 24-inch cast- iron pipe, utility spokeswoman Christy Holland said.

That service was restored about 7:30 p.m. Thursday after a 5-foot section of pipe was removed and replaced, with no impact to water quality.

The break created a sinkhole and sent a torrent of water into the streets, flooding the parking lot of a Jack in the Box and a CVS Pharmacy.
