Silver Lake Neighborhood Council Puts Safety First

The organization's public safety committee wants to help prepare locals for emergencies.

The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council's Public Safety Committee will focus on emergency preparedness at its upcoming meeting this week.

The committee is making plans to host Community Emergency Response Training, or CERT, classes in September.

The "ultimate goal" is to get 200 people to sign up, said Nadine Trujillo, co-chair of the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council's Public Safety Committee.

More than 50 people graduated from the class last year, according to Trujillo.

"It's involved," Trujillo said. "It's a lot of fun."

There will also be a discussion about establishing a Community Emergency Plan for Silver Lake at Tuesday's meeting, "so everyone is aware of or prepared for an emergency, she said.

It is especially important to form core groups among the 2,500-homes in the community to make it easier for people to help each other when an emergency occurs, according to Trujillo.

The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council's Public Safety Committee is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, at the The Living Room located at 3531 Sunset  Blvd.
