Off-Duty CHP Tackle Hit-And-Run Suspect On Hwy 80

A green Honda hit cars and flipped over, then the motorist reportedly took off on foot, according to officials.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA – Two off-duty California Highway Patrol officers chased down a man who fled from a rollover hit-and-run crash Thursday afternoon near El Cerrito.

The officers were in a personal car on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 near Central Avenue around 2 p.m. when they saw a green Honda crash into other vehicles and roll over.

The driver of the Honda allegedly started to run away, so the officers gave chase and eventually tackled him.

The suspect had a handgun with the serial number scratched off, which means it was likely stolen, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities did not immediately name the suspect or say what charges he might face. He was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries from the crash and was expected to be booked into the Santa Rita jail.
