El Cerrito Fire Damages 2 Businesses

The fire may have started when a surge protector strip shorted out.

EL CERRITO, CA — A fire this afternoon in El Cerrito caused about $150,000 of damage to a building and the contents of a business in the building, fire officials said.

The fire was reported at 4:36 p.m. at 11461 San Pablo Avenue, El Cerrito Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Pigoni said.

The fire got into the wall of the building, which houses two businesses. The business where the fire started was a fashion business with embellished hats and clothes.

Pigoni said the fire may have started when a surge protector strip shorted out. Staff at the other business reported the fire when they saw smoke coming through the wall, Pigoni said.

Fire caused smoke damage throughout the fashion business. No one was injured. Firefighters had the fire under control in about 30 minutes, according to Pigoni.
