El Cerrito Hosting Citywide Garage Sale

Announcement submitted by City of El Cerrito:

On Saturday, October 10, 2015, there will be over 70 garage sales in El Cerrito. Each individual garage sale contributes to the citywide event coordinated by the City of El Cerrito.

A listing of all the garage sales including a brief description of sale items and a map with the locations will be available starting on Friday, October 2nd, 2015 at the El Cerrito Recycling + Environmental Resource Center (7501 Schmidt Lane, El Cerrito CA 94530) and the El Cerrito Community Center (7007 Moeser Lane, El Cerrito CA 94530). The listing will also be available online at www.el-cerrito.org/garagesale.

The primary goal of the citywide garage sale is to promote reuse, an important part of waste reduction and the 3 Rs - Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle. However, the idea for the event was a result of the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. Twenty-five years ago, El Cerrito resident Marianne Hegeman proposed the concept of a Citywide Garage Sale to the El Cerrito City Council. Hegeman, an avid proponent of reuse and recycling, got the idea because many residents could not have the foundations of their homes inspected for possible earthquake damage because their garages were packed full of stuff. The City Council endorsed the idea, and the City has held at least one citywide garage sales every year since.
