Fire inspectors conduct inspections of occupied buildings, construction sites, review plans for compliance, enforce fire ordinances and regulations, and educate the public about fire safety.

Typical tasks include:

  • Reviews site plans for proposed buildings for compliance with emergency access, fire flow and hydrant requirements
  • Reviews non-structural building plans for new and remodeled buildings for compliance with the California Fire/Building Codes, ordinances and policies pertaining to fire and life safety
  • Reviews systems plans including fire sprinkler, standpipe, fire alarm,fixed fire suppression, clean agent, and smoke removal systems for compliance with applicable standards
  • Meets with developers, architects, contractors, water purveyors, building officials and planners to advise regarding plan modifications
  • Conducts field inspections to verify compliance of work with approved plans
  • Responds to telephone and over-the-counter inquiries regarding code requirements
  • Accesses the Land Information System to retrieve necessary information, update computer records and generate print-out reports
  • Writes letters and reports
  • Responds to environmental impact reports
  • Conducts fire flow tests in the field to evaluate fire hydrant performance

You must have a high school diploma or GED, plus some college in a variety of fields.
