Mudslides, Flooding, Sinkholes: It's a Disaster!

Contra Costa County takes steps to be declared a disaster area following storm damage. The goal is financial help for repairs and cleanup.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA - Contra Costa County Administrator David Twa called today for the Board of Supervisors to declare a state of emergency in the county due to infrastructure damage caused by recent storms.

The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors will consider ratifying the declaration in a special meeting on Jan. 26 that would allow the county to seek assistance from the state and federal government for response, repair and restoration efforts, county officials said.

County officials said the series of storms has led to widespread flooding, mudslides and sinkholes.

Most notably, a portion of Alhambra Valley Road near Pinole remains closed after a nearby overflowing creek washed away a large section of the roadway.

With more rain forecast over the next several days, county officials expect damage to roads and buildings to rise.

The county's request would go to the state first to determine if the disaster meets eligibility requirements for federal assistance, and if approved, the state would make further requests for assistance on the county's behalf.
