New Quake Hits El Cerrito

Exactly a week after the Bay Area was shaken by two rapid-succession earthquakes centered in El Cerrito, another 2.3-magnitude quake struck this morning, Monday, at the same epicenter at Mira Vista Golf and Country Club.

El Cerrito hosted another earthquake this morning, Monday, at the same spot as the – the section of the Hayward Fault that runs through .

This morning's quake struck at 7:55 a.m. and registered 2.3 magnitude, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The depth of the epicenter was 5.2 miles, the agency said.

Last week's two quakes struck seconds apart at 5:33 a.m. with considerably stronger force, 3.5 and 4.0 magnitude, the USGS said.

Latitude and longitude coordinates provided by the USGS placed this morning's epicenter next to a residential development surrounded by the golf course. (See attached map.)

UC seismologist Robert Uhrhammer said a bend in the Hayward Fault in El Cerrito makes the spot particularly prone to quakes, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Following last week's quakes, Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia issued a message with tips on earthquake safety and preparedness.
