Come join us to hear Dr. Bill Garret, former Professor of Religion and Philosophy at JFK University and UC Berkeley, and now teaches at OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute), give a seminar on Oct, 29th at 9:30 am. In “Help not Needed: The Disappearance of Employment-- A Coming Spiritual Crisis,” Dr. Garrett will be discussing the following:
What has been called the Fourth Industrial Revolution will drastically impact the nature of employment, of citizenship, and ultimately of personal identity. We are fast approaching the socio-economic situation in which workers (at least human workers) will no longer needed. Many economists agree that the convergence of technologies like Artificial Intelligence and robotics has, in many commercial enterprises (industrial as well as non-executive administrative) obviated the need the human workers. How will this transition impact society? Is there more to "work"― that is, employment― than earning a living? Certainly, money is important, but does it tell the whole story? What will become of humans when, objectively, they are no longer needed? How plausible is the proposal for Universal Guaranteed Income? What are the likely psychological impacts of such a well-intentioned policy?
Free. Everyone welcome. Fireside Room of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley, 1 Lawson Road (above the Arlington at Moeser, through Terrace and Craft), Kensington, CA. 94707.
