Clare Rose Gives $50,000 to Girls on the Run San Diego

Grant will fund more than 225 girls' participation in the after school program at locations around San Diego County

SAN DIEGO – Girls on the Run San Diego, a nonprofit organization providing after-school programs that teach lessons of self-confidence and empowerment to girls in 3rd through 8th grade, today announced that it has received a $50,000 grant from the Clare Rose Foundation.

“We are incredibly excited and grateful for the generosity and recognition of the Clare Rose Foundation, which has supported Girls on the Run San Diego for three years now,” said Amy Jerome, Girls on the Run San Diego’s executive director. “This grant will help us meet the growing community demand for our programs that inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum, which creatively integrates running.”

Approximately 1200 girls are expected to participate in Girls on the Run programs at more than 40 locations in San Diego County this year. The organization anticipates it will provide either full or partial scholarships to more than 663 girls who cannot afford to pay for the full cost of the program. Many of those girls will also receive a free pair of running shoes.

The Clare Rose Foundation’s grant will fund participation for more than 225 girls, or 15 Girls on the Run teams in economically challenged communities. That includes registration fees, shoes, t-shirts, water bottles, healthy snacks, coach training and transportation to the Girls on the Run 5k at NTC in Liberty Station, Point Loma. The Spring 5k is scheduled for 9 a.m., Sunday, May 17.

“My family and my board are honored and thrilled to support Girls on the Run,” said Clare Rose Foundation President Anne Vincent. “We love the idea of providing tuition to these particular areas, the communities on which we have been focusing, where they need that kind of support. This program can make a huge difference in girls’ lives.”

The Clare Rose Foundation is a small, family grant-making organization committed to honoring the values of its founder, Valerie Vincent, by supporting organizations and causes that foster health and wellness, while strengthening communities. The foundation’s grants have focused on the areas of education, health and social services. From the start of the foundation in 1997 to her death in 2007, Valerie Vincent steered its grants toward causes to which she felt a strong connection through relationships with community leaders.

Her daughter continues that legacy of giving, forming partnerships with community leaders committed to strengthening the nonprofit sector and providing resources to communities in need.

As a runner and mother of a 5-year-old girl, “I think Girls on the Run is a wonderful combination of running and fitness with a curriculum of confidence building and empowering young girls,” Anne Vincent said. “My mom was passionate about the empowerment of women, too, and this just seemed to fit with everything we believe.”
