Man Killed In Encinitas Bicycle Accident ID'd

The accident happened in the 2700 block of South Coast Highway ​101, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

ENCINITAS, CA — A man killed in a bicycle accident over the weekend in Encinitas has been identified, authorities said.

The accident happened shortly after midnight Sunday in the 2700 block of South Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Ryan Currie, 48, of Encinitas was riding northbound along the east side of South Coast Highway in the protected bicycle lane on an Electra Townie bicycle, Sgt. Jeremy Collis said. Deputies and paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but the Currie died from his injuries.

"The San Diego County Sheriff's Department encourages bicyclists to utilize protective equipment, including helmets and reflective clothing while riding," Collis said. "We would also like to remind riders that proper lighting is required when riding at night."

Sheriff's traffic investigators were working to gather more information to determine the circumstances of the collision.

Anyone with information about the accident was asked to call the North Coastal Sheriff's Station Traffic Division at 760-966-3500.
