Music By The Sea Concert: Smoke & Mirrors Ensemble

Percussion Ensemble Formed at the Colburn Conservatory.

Five graduates of the Colburn Conservatory weave the sound of

five marimba players as if they were one person, presenting

programs of the masters and young composers. The L.A. based ensemble aims

"to use the simple tools of rhythm, pitch, and timbre in a complex manner

to create intensely effective experiences; and, in the process, expand the

public's literacy in the percussion repertoire." They will perform music

from their two albums.

Their debut

album on the Yarlung label includes selections by Steve Reich, Eric


Whitacre, Happenstance, Toru Takemitsu, and Ravel, and a world premiere


recording by ensemble member Derek Tywoniuk. Their follow-up album, Vanish,

also for Yarlung, includes selections by Avner Dorman, Derek Tywoniuk, Sergei

Rachmaninoff, and Toru Takemitsu. PLUS: Enjoy a complimentary glass of wine on
