“We have 15 spots available this season for aspiring naturalists,” said Doug Gibson, executive director and principal scientist with the conservancy. “We’re looking forward to school field trips, public walks, family days and community events, and summer camps. We need nature ambassadors of all ages and backgrounds who can help us meet the demand for interpretive programs at the lagoon.”
The eight-week training course (Sep. 30-Dec. 2; 40 hours total) covers the ecology and history of San Elijo Lagoon. Docent training offers practical interpretive techniques and tips on how to lead groups of students and adults. Knowledge of the reserve or educator experience is not necessary: all the tools for learning will be provided. Students who complete training will join the docent family of friendly and knowledgeable lagoon protectors.
