Elderly Encino Man Makes U-Turn on Freeway, Killed in Head-On Crash

An elderly ENcino man who drove the wrong way on U.S. Highway 101 in King City was killed in a head-on collision with a van Monday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The man was identified today as 93-year-old Howard Reiss, CHP officials said.

Reiss was driving a 2013 Toyota Camry on Highway 101 at Broadway Street around 11:45 p.m., CHP Officer Jared Sobyra said. He pulled over at the shoulder, made a U-turn on the northbound lanes, where he drove south and collided into the front of a 2008 Dodge Sprinter, Sobyra said. Reiss was killed in the collision.

The Dodge driver, a 51-year-old South San Francisco man, was transported to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas for complaint of pain to the left side of his body, according to Sobyra. The freeway’s northbound lanes were closed for several hours early this morning but have since reopened, Sobyra said.

Investigators have not determined if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision, according to Sobyra.
